What Do I Do After a Car Accident?

What Do I Do After a Car Accident?

Anytime you are involved in an auto accident, you are almost guaranteed to have a headache! These traumatic situations can be tough physically, emotionally, mentally, and even financially. Knowing ahead of time what to do after a crash can lift a huge weight off your shoulders. Be prepared with these tips!

1. Access the Situation

From fender benders to rollovers, try to stay calm. Take a deep breathe and access the damage and injuries.

2. Call the Police

For the safety of everyone involved and to document the accident to help insurance claims go smoothly, contact the police as soon as possible. If there are injuries, other emergency response teams would also be dispatched.

3. Exchange Insurance Info

When it’s safe, exchange contact and insurance information with the other drivers involved. Your insurance agent/company will need this info when you file the claim. If possible, get contact info for any witnesses as well to avoid he-said-she-said situations!

4. Take Pictures

Photos can help paint the picture of what happened for your claims adjuster. Take as many photos showing the scene as possible. Include road signs, skid marks, and the damages of all the vehicles involved.

5. Call Your Agent!

Whether you think you were at fault or not, please contact us after an accident. We can help organize all of the documentation you have and assist in filing that claim to your carrier or the other party if you were not at fault!

6. Get Medical Attention As Needed

During and after an accident, you may feel just fine with all of the adrenaline pumping or even be in mild shock. If you feel the need at all, please go get checked out by a medical professional! The State of Utah requires all drivers to have a least $3,000 in “personal injury protection” coverage on auto insurance policies. Regardless of who is at fault, your policy will pay up to that limit for medical attention. Don’t be afraid to call your agent to discuss this!

We will all likely be in a car accident at some point, it’s just a matter of time. Having a game plan of what to do after an accident will greatly reduce your headache and help us get you back to where you should be!
